Finding
Administrative Assistant Jobs
If
you are interested in finding an administrative assistant job,
you should know that you may have difficulty getting started.
There are several ways that you can promote yourself so that the
right people will "discover" you. Following are some
suggestions to help you get the administrative assistant job that
you want. You should definitely consider working through a temp
agency, just to get your foot in the door. You may feel discouraged
at the thought of a temporary job rather than a full-time one,
but if you are already temping for the agency when they open a
position up, you will already be there and they already know your
work ethic.
Use the internet to search out administrative assistant jobs available
in your area. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of websites
where you can search for the perfect position for you. Many websites
even offer tips about resume writing and interview skills.
Sharpen your skills on use of computer programs such as MS Word,
Excel and Powerpoint. Also, work on general office skills, including
simple things like filing, appropriately answering phones, and
organizing information. Most administrative assistant jobs will
have the skills needed listed on the job listing.
Once you have found a few jobs that interest you and that you
are qualified for, you should prepare the materials that you will
be sending to the companies. Many people use basic form letters
and the same resume for every job they apply for. This is unwise.
Computer programs make it so easy for you to tweak these materials
so that they can be individually aimed at one specific agency.
However you choose to do it, you should send each company you
are applying to a resume and references with a cover letter. Take
the time to use references that are pertinent to the job you are
looking at.
If you have done all of these things, but are still having no
luck, you might want to develop a long-term plan to improve your
employability. Take on some additional responsibilities at school
or the job you currently have. If you aren't in school, consider
going back to school to help you get the skills you need.
No matter what else you do, you should start administrative assistant
job searching well in advance of the date you hope to start. Many
companies have a lot of red tape you have to work through in order
to even get your application to the "powers that be."
If at all possible, don't quit your current job until after you
have gotten the position you are really wanting. Check out AdministrativeAssistant.info
